Building Business Capability in Central Australia
Twenty pastoral industry participants came together in Alice Springs last week to take part in the Business EDGE course, focused on strengthening financial literacy and business decision-making across northern production systems.
Delivered by Bush Agribusiness, the course was secured by the Northern Territory Cattlemen’s Association (NTCA) with support from the Northern Hub, through funding from the Future Drought Fund.
Business EDGE is a nationally recognised training program developed by Meat & Livestock Australia, designed to build practical business management skills for producers. The course focuses on financial literacy, risk management and strategic planning, which are critical skills for running resilient pastoral businesses in the North.
While technical capability across the northern cattle industry remains strong, programs like this are helping address a clear gap by building confidence in the financial side of the business.
Many young people stepping into leadership roles on stations have had limited exposure to financial management. This course is designed to give participants the tools to better understand their numbers, ask the right questions, and make informed decisions for their operations. It is also a great opportunity for established leaders and business owners or managers to learn how to look deeper into their numbers and how they can make more data driven decisions.
The Alice Springs delivery marks the final Business EDGE course in a broader Financial Literacy and Pastoral Planning Project being rolled out across the NT and WA in partnership with the Kimberley Pilbara Cattlemen’s Association.
The project will continue throughout 2026 with additional preparation and planning workshops and field days, reinforcing learning in a practical, on-ground context.
By combining structured training with real-world application, the initiative is supporting more profitable, resilient and sustainable pastoral businesses across northern Australia.
More broadly, it reflects a growing industry focus on strengthening capability beyond the station gate. Long-term success relies not only on production, but also on strong business fundamentals and informed decision-making in an increasingly complex operating environment.
